I have not covered the topic cattle mutilations before but was digging around in the F.B.I. UFO files and discovered that 1973 there were about 40 cattle mutilations throughout Kansas into Nebraska…. This phenomenon was so wide spread by 1975 that the Denver Post paper suggested if the F.B.I. would not investigate the mutilations, that Senator Floyd Haskell should take that matter to congress for resolution. (1)
Cattle mutilations are the unexplained killing of livestock, sometimes horses and other animals. There is usually a lack of blood at the scene as if the animals have been drained. Sexual organs along with ears, eyes, lips, hearts, tongues, lymph glands and rectums are removed. It is as if the animals have been taken butchered and placed back at their locations afterward.
The mutilations have been recorded as early as 1606 in the court of King James I in England where sheep were slaughtered, and their innards taken. (2) Also, as early as 1966 in modern history John Keel discovered animal mutilations in the Upper Ohio River Valley, around Gallipolis, OH. (3)
One George E. Onet, Doctor of Veterinary medicine and mutilation investigator stated one of the interesting facts is that after the animals are killed, other predator’s coyotes, wolves, dogs, bobcats, skunks refuse to go near the animal. It is as if they are frightened. Usually these attacks happen in brief periods. So, you may hear of several killings and then it goes quiet.
September 9, 1967 Agnes King and her son found their 3-year horse Lady, dead. The horse’s head and neck had been skinned and defleshed. Lady’s body had cuts that Agnes said looked precise. There was no blood anywhere, but there was a strong medicinal smell around the body. Also, no tracks of any kind were found within 100 yards of Lady’s body. Later when it was investigated they found “no earthly causes” of death. (4) This was a killing that drew media attention to the occurrences. This was also one of the first cases thought to be the possible work of UFOs, alien mutilation.
Since mutilations began showing up, people have attributed the attacks as being the work of UFO’s, Chupacabra, the military, the government, occult groups and cryptids. Some even believed most died naturally and then humans mutilated them for some deviant form of fun or sexual gratification. There have been reports of black helicopters circling above the areas. The area of these occurrences in modern day were wide spread throughout the western states.
The FBI finally did step in and form an investigative task force called “Operation Animal Mutilation”. It was started with a grant, Law enforcement endowment of $44, 170 to determine the cause of the mutilations and how it would affect the work of law enforcement. There were other experiments to attempt to explain the cause of death to the animals... An experiment in Arkansas revealed if you left a carcass out inside for 48 hours that natural predators could do some of damage that was observed in the mutilations. The farmers disagreed, because the actual cause of death was not established. Also, when tested, some of the animals were depleted in one mineral and had massive amounts of others that would not naturally occur.
In the summer of 1973 Ron and Paula Watson, two farmers in Missouri witnessed an abduction they never forgot. It was not of a person. What they saw was a UFO abduction of a cow. They said they saw a 'green, cone-shaped craft' – next to which two 'silver little beings' were standing over a large black cow.
'I told Ron, 'My god, they got a cow! What are they doing to it?' Paula said. 'It had its eyes open and its tongue was like, hanging out a little bit. But it just laid there, and it didn't move.'
She described in detail how she saw the aliens running their hands over the cow and then inspecting their long fingers before they 'floated' it into their large ship in the distance. (5)
5 years later in the summer 1978 laboratory tests were being done as a response to the cattle mutilations in North Central New Mexico. This near Dulce, New Mexico famous in UFO history for an underground based that housed aliens and had an actual battle. In the fall when a previous unreported UFO incident came to light. The results of the tests were cited for two startling reasons:
- There was a UFO incident in the area of tests 4 days before the tests were done.
- There were materials that were present in the UFO incident were the same materials discovered in cattle mutilations. (6)
Christopher O’Brien an author and investigator of the mutilations feels as if the natural processes after death in these animals are not respected enough. However, he also acknowledges the strange findings he cannot explain himself.
On one occasion which O'Brien calls his 'strangest case' – he was called to the scene of a mutilated calf in Del Norte, Colorado.
'It was really freaky, it wouldn't rot,' he said. 'It was found in a complete pristine, five-inch snow field without one drop of blood on the snow. All the blood had been taken from the animal. The heart and liver had been expertly excised and left in the body cavity.
'The chief medical veterinary pathologist said, "it wasn't an animal that did this". (7)
O’Brien revealed in his book, “Stalking the Heard” the calf was also missing its spine from hips to the skull, and the brain was gone. It’s front right leg was gone most of its ribs, both eyes, ears, intestines and reproductive tract, and lung were missing. Its rectum was also mutilated. (8) Two witnesses had seen a beam of light near the house the evening before.
Some believe, like biochemist Colm Kelleher, scientist and investigator the mutilations are most likely a U.S. government effort to track the spread of Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease. It maybe the black ops helicopter sightings near the cattle mutilations. On July 15, 1974 two helicopters a white and black open fired on Robert Smith Jr. while he was on his tractor in Iowa. This after several mutilations in the area. It might explain the rumors of the cattle being dropped from the sky. (9)
Investigator and filmmaker Linda Moulton Howe talked about horse mutilations in 2011 in England. She discussed a large aerial craft and missing time that several witnesses experienced in Utah during Dec. 2011. (10) As in the U.S. the mutilations have been explained to media by police as natural causes and predation. Howe reported first on 4 black stallions mutilations in S.W. England, where eyes and body parts were removed, but with a lack of blood anywhere around the site. Tanya Ingraham said she believed the police where trying to cover up the mutilations. She also remembers in 2009 balls of light were circling in the sky above the pasture and then next day her neighbor was missing 3 goats.
The number of mutilations has gone down in the U.S. since the 1970’s, though they still are occurring. In Northern California 1997, ranchers Bill and Jean Barton discovered their 2000-pound Angus bull dead and mutilated in a field strewn with volcanic rock. It was on their winter ranch. A field inspector Jean Bilodeaux discovered a blackish substance on the bull’s chest and testicles. When analyzed turned out to be bovine hemoglobin that could only be processed in a lab with complex laboratory centrifuge processes. In the next few years the Barton ranch would suffer the loss of two more bulls in the same fashion…. (11)
In it is not just in U.S. where this occurs, in South America, since 2002 more than 4000 mutilations have occurred and more each week are reported. In the thousands of cases in the U.S. no human intervention has ever been recorded. As paranormal investigator Chuck Zukowski stated, “They are cold cases, unsolved mysteries.” (12)
